The Bentsen Chair Presents: The Future of Public Policy Seminar

Joshua Holland, "The Political Journalism in an Era of Fake News"

As we gain a better understanding of how dark PR campaigns, fake news and social media trolls shaped the political discourse around the 2016 election, journalists and those who care about a free press are looking with trepidation at a future where elections become contests of media manipulation rather than debates over public policy and governing experience. Given the structural realities of our open press, there are no obvious solutions to this problem, but we have to grapple with it nonetheless.

Joshua Holland, a contributor to The Nation and Rolling Stone will look at a number of studies examining the new media landscape that emerged in 2016, and host an open discussion of some of the challenges it presents, and a look at how some people are trying to beat back the flood of disinformation that shaped many people's views of the last election before the next one.

Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP at https://joshuaholland.eventbrite.com.
